iFixit discovers a surprise in a prototype of Google's Project Tango phone:
This appears to be PrimeSense's new Capri PS1200 SoC 3D imaging chip, unexpected for a couple of reasons:
Just last year, Apple bought PrimeSense, manufacturer of the Kinect's 3D vision hardware. Speculators assumed we would be seeing this hot new hardware in an upcoming iOS device, with intent of mapping 3D spaces. Looks like Tango beat Apple to the punch with their own tech?
I assume Apple is likely honoring previous contractual agreements here so no biggie, but it does get me thinking again as to what product Apple envisions using PrimeSense tech in? The Apple TV doesn't make sense as it exists today because it require adding a camera and strategic placement of the device in your living room ala Kinect. That leaves the iPhone, but why, or the rumored “TV made by Apple”, where having a camera and prime location in the living room so that a gesture controlled UI can be implemented make perfect sense.
